The Boat Race: Oxford vs. Cambridge

Take a trip to the Thames from Strand Palace Hotel this Saturday to witness a prime piece of British sporting tradition. The BNY Mellon Boat Race, or as it’s more commonly called, the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race, will be taking place in the capital. The 4.25-mile (6.8-kilometer) course runs from Putney to Mortlake and sees the two ancient universities battle it out in rowboats. All along the river’s edge, crowds gather to watch the action, and people up and down the country take sides and join in the fierce rivalry. Historically, Cambridge has the upper hand with a grand total of 81 wins versus Oxford’s 78, but both teams are hungry for victory, so it promises to be a nail-biting day. What’s more, the first ever women’s Boat Race will take place shortly before the men’s, so there is a reason to celebrate, no matter which team you support.

As a hotel near the Thames, Strand Palace makes a great base during the event. Whether you want to get as close to the Thames as possible, or just watch the action in a riverside bar, there are plenty of ways to join in the fun.

The Star and Garter

Take your starting position at the Star and Garter pub on the Putney Embankment. Here you will be able to feel the electric atmosphere before the Boat Race starts. The pub is right next to the starting line and has great views from its ballroom. As with most pubs on the race route, it is likely to be packed with spectators eager to see the race, so arrive early in the day to secure a seat well before the action gets underway.

Hammersmith Bridge

For another front-row vantage point, make your way to Hammersmith Bridge, which spans the Thames. It is located at a crucial point in the race and can make for dramatic viewing as the race crews pass underneath you. Don’t worry if you don’t get a prime spot on the bridge as there are many bars nearby, and Furnivall Gardens on the north river bank will show the race on a big screen, so you won’t miss a thing.

The Ship

Located near the finish line in Mortlake, this pub is the place to go to catch the final throes of this fierce race. It will be busy, so expect a lively, party atmosphere. Celebrate or commiserate the race results with a drink before returning to Strand Palace Hotel.

The women’s race starts at 4.50pm and the men’s begins at 5.50pm. When you want to return to Strand Palace Hotel after the race, take the Tube to nearby Embankment station or Leicester Square station. From Mortlake, catch the train back to Waterloo and from there, it’s just a 15-minute walk to Strand Palace Hotel. After arriving back at Strand Palace Hotel, rest and relax in your comfortable rooms, or grab a restorative bite to eat in Daawat or the Carvery & Grill restaurant, and sip on delectable cocktails in the Lounge Bar or the Gin Palace.
