Catch A Pantomime This Holiday Season

Travelling to London during the festive season and looking for unique cultural experience? Then there’s nothing better than taking in a traditional pantomime performance. From The Snowman to Robin Hood, there are a number of magical shows for children and adults in London’s famous theatre district, all located near to Strand Palace Hotel. Here’s a small selection of our favourites.

The Snowman at The Peacock Theatre

Now in its 17th year at London’s Peacock Theatre, The Snowman is a show based on the timeless children’s book by Raymond Briggs (also known in the UK for its animated television adaptation), and tells the story of a boy whose snowman comes alive on Christmas Eve. The production runs until the 4th January and is popular with children of all ages. Conveniently, the Peacock Theatre is near to Strand Palace – in fact it’s less than a ten minute walk away.

Treasure Island at the National Theatre

An adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic adventure, Treasure Island is another wonderful choice for families with slightly older children this holiday season (note that the performance is not recommended for children under the age of 10). Playing on the impressive Olivier stage at London’s beloved National Theatre until the 19th February, this Flanagan Collective show is a new two-hander adaption featuring a massive pirate ship. The theatre is located just across the River Thames from Strand Palace Hotel and is an easy – and postcard perfect – 15-minute walk.

Robin Hood at Winterville

Children over the age of four will love this pantomime performance of Robin Hood. It takes place inside the Speigeltent, located in London’s latest Christmas villagem Winterville in Victoria Park. Although a little way across the city from Strand Palace Hotel, this rollicking show full of slapstick comedy, puppets and live music is well worth the journey. Playing until the 31st December, this impressive hour-long adaption features all the beloved characters from the original English folk tale, while managing to crowbar in the odd singing reindeer too!

Slava’s Snowshow at Royal Festival Hall

Although not strictly a pantomime, this festive show is also worth sincere consideration. Slava’s Snowshow, playing at London’s Royal Festival Hall until the 5th January, has been entertaining children and adults alike for 20 years, combining theatrical clowning with over-the-top spectacle that builds up to a heart-stopping finale that will dazzle even the most jaded of audiences!

Looking for a hotel near the Peacock Theatre and other great pantomimes? Strand Palace is within easy reach of all these productions, making it the perfect choice for a festive break.
