Fans of Grand Designs will be glad to hear that the TV show about the best and boldest home designs will be coming to town from 2 to 10 May. It’s your chance to see more than 500 stalls boasting the latest in home design, as well as to see the programme’s star, Kevin McCloud, in action.
For those not familiar with the show, Grand Designs follows intrepid people who take on the massive challenge of creating their ideal home. Having run since 1999, its enduring popularity has ignited the creative spark in many of its audience members. Now, they and other design enthusiasts can find out how to transform their home at this great event.

What to expect
The environmentally conscious can discover pioneering inventions at Kevin McCloud’s Green Heroes exhibit. One of the highlights of Grand Designs Live, it contains all sorts of innovative products including cardboard lampshades from Graypants and water waste solutions from Ezy Peezy.
Attendees can also look forward to expert advice on their own grand design plans. The Ask an Expert service gives budding designers the chance to book in for a 30-minute consultation session, during which they can pick the brains of a design expert – for free. The experts can tell you about everything from project management to garden design, so get your thinking cap on come up with some good questions.
Watch panel discussions and lectures in the Grand Theatre for more information and advice. Kevin McCloud, architecture specialists Charlie Luxton and George Clarke, as well as other eminent guests, will all be on stage. Topics tackled will range from kitchen conundrums to technology trailblazers. Those with a passion for interior design will love the Grand Interiors Theatre, where more professionals will dispense advice on sprucing up your house.

Getting to the show
The Excel venue is located near London City Airport and is very near the Prince Regent and Custom House Dockland Light Railway (DLR) stations, which connects it to London’s Tube network. To reach Excel from Strand Palace, take the District line from Embankment station and switch to the DLR at Tower Hill. Check the Grand Designs Live website for specific event times and to book tickets.
