Visit Charing Cross
Immerse yourself in history and tradition at one of London’s most central hotels. The Strand Palace Hotel sits near Charing Cross Station, just a stone’s throw from classic British movie sets, inspirational theatre halls and museums.
Charing Cross is the true centre of London, home to the junction where all distances from London are measured – and just a minute’s walk from the Strand Palace Hotel.
The whole of the Charing Cross area was once taken up by Hungerford Market, where fish, fruit, vegetables and meat were sold. A place full of character, colour and excitement. This is where a suspension bridge across the Thames was constructed for suppliers and shoppers. Today’s version, the Hungerford Bridge directly behind the station, is a fantastic way to walk over the river, with views in every direction, from the Houses of Parliament to the London Eye, and all just down the road from the Strand Palace Hotel.
Charing Cross Highlights
If you like live shows then the authentic British theatres around Charing Cross are a must visit. There are two super theatres tucked away between the Strand Palace Hotel and the Thames – The Playhouse and Charing Cross Theatre. The spirit of the latter’s Victorian music hall still lingers, as the venue serves up musicals and cabaret performances, and late-night shows.
There’s also a whole warren to explore under Charing Cross station. Look up through grilles at trains running above and get glimpses of London from extraordinary angles on an exclusive tour led by members of the London Transport Museum. As a bonus, joining one of these tours also includes a pass to the fascinating London Transport Museum itself, just down the road from the Strand Palace.
Like the theatre, Charing Cross’ Victorian roots are an amazing find. The theatrical links go back further – it’s thought that the first Punch and Judy show in England was held in Charing Cross, performed by an Italian puppeteer in 1666.
