The Mousetrap – West End Show of the Month

The Mousetrap – February’s West End Show of the Month

Taking in a West End show is one of London’s most unmissable activities. In 2014, almost 15 million people watched a production in London’s famous Theatreland, but with hundreds of world-class shows every night it can be hard to choose just one. We at Strand Palace Hotel want to help make your West End experience extra special, so each month we pick one of our favourite shows and tell you all you need to know about it!

This month… The Mousetrap.

About the show

The Mousetrap is the longest-running show in the West End. In fact, it is the longest-running show of any kind anywhere in the world. First performed way back in 1952, this compelling Agatha Christie ‘whodunnit’ murder mystery has now been performed more than 25,000 times – latterly at St. Martin’s Theatre, near to Strand Palace Hotel (since March 1974). The story begins with a murder on Culver Street in Paddington, at which witnesses recall hearing somebody whistling the nursery rhyme Three Blind Mice. Over the course of the play, suspicions fall on a number of different characters for various reasons, until finally the murderer is revealed – to audible gasps – at the very end. As the curtains fall, the audience is asked never to reveal the identity of the murderer to anybody… after all, that’s what keeps theatregoers coming back after 63 years.

Insider show tips

As a hotel near St. Martin’s Theatre, in the heart of the West End, we at Strand Palace Hotel are always able to offer our guests expert insider’s advice about how to see The Mousetrap. Here are some of our top tips:

  • BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE: As with most theatres, the best seats in the house are in the stalls, and at St. Martin’s the finest views come from Row E, Seats 7 to 16. These are also, of course, the most expensive. To get more bang from your buck, try Row N, Seats 8 to 13; great views at half the price.
  • CHEAPEST TICKETS: Our expert concierge service at Strand Palace Hotel can provide you with the best seats in your chosen price category for The Mousetrap. Call us in advance of your stay for big savings, or visit our concierge desk during your stay and we’ll secure the best tickets still available.
  • TIPS AND TRICKS: Unlike when you go to the opera or ballet, the dress code at West End theatre is completely informal, so feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable. To make sure you don’t miss any of the show by queuing, arrive early and order your interval drinks and snacks in advance. Don’t worry, you won’t be asked to pay any extra for this service, and tipping isn’t expected either.

Before and after

As any regular visitor to the West End will know, there are no shortage of bars and restaurants in this part of the city, and many offer specific set menus for theatregoers. If you want to keep things simple, you can also choose one of the great dining and drinking options in Strand Palace Hotel. For example, you could enjoy a pre-theatre meal at our excellent Indian menu Daawat, or could return from the theatre to cocktails in our atmospheric Gin Palace. It’s the perfect way to start and end your evening at London’s longest running show.
