Sadler’s Wells is arguably the world’s number one arts venue dedicated to international dance, with shows ranging from street dance to ballet, flamenco to hip hop. It’s always a great theatre to visit, just a short walk from Strand Palace Hotel, but the time couldn’t be any better than now, as it is currently showing a magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands.
About the show
This is the futuristic story of a boy, Edward, who is left half-built when his inventor dies – leaving him with unwieldy blades for hands. Originally created by Tim Burton as a film, the story has since been retold in multiple mediums, and this production, playing at Sadler’s Wells Theatre until 11th January, does it in dance.
Using the original music from the movie, this adaption is the second take by award-winning choreographer Matthew Bourne (Swan Lake) and his New Adventures dance company, and has been receiving rave reviews around the world. Called ‘magical’ and ‘witty’ by theatre critics from New York to London for its gorgeous set and pitch perfect choreography, the production has been touring the world with sold-out performances, and only returned to Sadler’s Wells for a short run during the holiday season. The show stars Dominic North, who returns to the title role that earned him a Best Male Dancer National Dance Award nomination. Joining him in the role of Edward will be equally talented Billy Elliot star Liam Mower. The wonderfully kitsch set design, which brings you back to 1950s American suburbia, is as creative as the choreography, done by Olivier Award winner Lez Brotherston.
